Marlborough Regional Development Trust (MRDT)
MRDT is the Marlborough Economic Development Agency. MRDT has fostered the development of the Marlborough Aviation Cluster and has been closely involved with the establishing of the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre. MRDT commissioned a study in 2005/2006 into Marlborough’s potential as a centre for aviation construction – specifically the Gippsland Aeronautics GA200 light agricultural aircraft – which concluded that Marlborough did have potential in aircraft assembly/manufacture due principally to the existing cornerstone industry participants of RNZAF, SAFE Air and Nelson/Marlborough Institute of Technology.

Marlborough Aviation Cluster

Base Woodbourne is the RNZAF maintenance and engineering training centre. Many trained personnel have retired in Marlborough (remembering that retirement is usually after 10 or 20 years service) creating a pool of trained aviation engineering that feed SAFE Air and existing and potential aviation businesses.
