“Red boots” and President John Jones had the pleasure of attending the opening of the Black Hanger at Rangiora airfield last Tuesday night. The Black Hanger click here is the latest asset to be added to that available for training in the industry. Initially the facility had its origins in agrichemical applications, however the hanger itself is an excellent multipurpose training facility where pilots and engineers can fly in and undertake practical and theoretical training concurrently. Rangiora is a bustling airfield 45 minutes north of Christchurch and home to quite a few AIA members including; Way to Go Helicopters and Pat Soutter’s engineering base.
The Second meeting of our new Governance Group occurred on Wednesday morning. At morning tea Nigel Gould and Graeme Harris joined the Directors at the point we were discussing whether or not there’s a crisis looming on pilot and flight instructor shortages. We have this matter as a red flag on the agenda as it’s one of the most controversial issues splitting the community as evident by NZALPA’s reaction to the CTC press release of the previous day click here.
The Board has requested AIA repackage the arguments, making them crisp and ensuring the industry speaks with a united voice. We will be working hard with you on this issue and please do not think we have forgotten Engineers because we haven’t.
Later the same day John Jones and “the boots” met with Peter Newport to discuss the concept of an international air display over Auckland on anniversary weekend combined with static displays in the cloud and on Queens wharf. We’d like to have your feed back on what you think – as an opportunity to position aviations contribution to the Auckland economy we think it’s got some merits. While there was some discussion about use of an airport in conjunction with the display we’re nervous about this concept as we don’t have any core competencies in airshows.
Yesterday “the boots” attended the meeting of the New Zealand Aviation Federation which is the forum the Sport and Recreational community meet within. NZAF is the other joint venture party in ownership of ASPEQ – incidentally this companies turnover is now in excess of $9m and looking to grow further as opportunities arise in Asia, Europe and the Middle East.

Helicopter Safety Review – we’ve been advised that CASA is undertaking similar work and we’ll be learning from some of their findings. We think there is merit in CAA joining as a partner in this review and we will be putting this to the NZHA Executive when they next meet on 17 May.
