Over the last few months, we’ve mostly had guest editorials as the lead in to the newsletter.

It is clear from the feedback that you’re appreciating many of the stories that our members are telling. The President, for example, has received a number of comments about his piece on ‘going beyond regulation’. Keep up those responses!

It is also clear that the various stories are giving us all a better understanding of just what is happening in our industry and who does what. They are a resource that you can continue to draw on. Just looking at a few recent examples:

AVM Peter Stockwell wrote about the military/civilian relationship, something that will be followed further at the Conference later this year
Errol Burtenshaw in his account of the Air NZ B787 – 9 purchase, also previewed some developments at Air New Zealand over the coming year
Mike Newman described some of the challenges facing the pilot training industry – these will be addressed further at the training and development meeting next week
Bruce Heesterman in explaining the role of ASPEQ, gave some insights into how successful they are being outside New Zealand
Ray Thorpe from MET Service explained the important role they play, and could have written more on their international successes
Trevor Wilcock from Ardmore Airport sees an important and growing role for GA

That is just going back into November. One of my favourites was Peter Garden describing pest eradication and life on Gough Island in the South Atlantic. This is another great example of the expertise that exists in New Zealand and is finding a global market.

This week, we can bring you news on the deal arranged with Southern Cross and of the programme we are about to roll out with the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority.

Cho Chan, our intern from the University of Massachusetts Lowell, comes from Hong Kong. She has now developed an Aviation NZ page, in Mandarin, on Weibo, a social media site in China (also used by Tourism NZ, Air NZ and NZ Trade & Enterprise). We are adding content and updating material regularly – we’re about to add a piece on why potential pilots should come to New Zealand for their training. We have the ability now to add material from companies and to link to your websites. Contact us if you would like to be involved.

Growth Opportunities

We’ve followed up progress companies have made since the Aviation Mission went to Indonesia last May. Companies have now secured well over NZ$1m in new business with contacts made during the visit, there are some formal MoUs in place and most participants are optimistic that they will generate business in 2014. Good progress has been achieved by companies providing specialised training (especially engineering) and in airport fit-outs. We are in the process of entering a programme with the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) and have secured funding from them for companies that wish to take part in a pilot project. The programme will cover energy audits, energy efficiency training, and feasibility studies for renewable energy or energy efficient equipment. Companies typically save between 10% and 15% of their energy costs, but some have achieved 40% savings, through these programmes. Our initial focus will be on the Logistics Division. Auckland Airport uses EECA. Air New Zealand won the supreme award at the EECA 2012 Awards for its ‘energy savings and positive influence” – it also reduced annual carbon emissions by 142,000 tonnes. We’re now able to bring the programme to the smaller companies in the aviation industry.
