Dear Colleagues
I am delighted to be speaking with you as the incoming CEO of Aviation New Zealand.
As we celebrate 100 years of aviation, now is the ideal time to reflect and relaunch Aviation NZ so that it serves our industry well for the next 100 years.
I see our role as to Lead, Inspire and Grow the NZ aviation industry. With the support of you, our members and stakeholders, we can achieve this.
Who am I and why am I here?
I am something of a (junior) aviation industry veteran. I have been in the industry for the last 15 years in leadership roles in New Zealand, Australia and Europe. Over the last 5 years I was the CEO and prior to that the Director of Global Programmes for CANSO (www.canso.org) the global organisation for the air traffic management industry, based in the Netherlands.
As a passionate Kiwi, my goal has always been to use my global expertise and contacts to propel the growth of the NZ aviation industry – so this is what I have returned home to achieve.
My goal is to inspire and lead the NZ aviation industry to deliver on its full growth potential by harnessing partnerships, focussing resources and reducing constraints. More from me on these topics each week.
What are my immediate priorities?
Member Engagement
Our members are Aviation NZ, without your support we don’t exist.
I will speak or meet with all of you over the next 6 months so I can hear directly what you want and need from us. What are we doing well, what can we do better? I have some pretty clear views on this, but it’s important I hear from you.
We will release a member survey in March for your views. I know everyone hates surveys (me included). In order to ease the pain, we will offer some good prizes :)
Ask Me Anything Friday – I will keep my diary free between 3-4pm each Friday so you can contact me by email or phone to discuss any subject you like. 021 889 856 or email
I will also start a roadshow in March to visit you in person.
Value for all members
We must deliver tangible value for every member. To start with I have already reduced our costs by $45k. I will be looking for further savings over the next few weeks. I will be redirecting our resources to where we can deliver the most benefit to members and the industry.
Communications
We need to communicate in a targeted and timely way. We need to bring our comms into the 21st century in terms of presentation, content, and the platforms we use, e.g. social media.
As a first step – our weekly newsletter will now go to ALL members and stakeholders.
Aviation Leadership Summit
It is important we have an annual leadership event for industry and partners which is inspiring, engaging and entertaining. This will be a world-class event centralised to a hub location, this year Wellington 20-22 July 2014. More details soon.
We will also at least one key regional event each year.
Policy and Regulatory Environment
We will take a more strategic approach to shaping our policy and regulatory frameworks. Some Immediate priorities are National Airspace & Air Navigation Plan, RPAS, and CAA Act Review. CAA Regulation Review - Committee has just ruled in favour of CAA. More on these issues next week.
Thank You
In closing, I would like to recognise and thank Irene King and John Nicholson for all their hard work and achievements in developing Aviation NZ into the significant organisation it is today. We are fortunate that John will remain with us. Finally, I would also like to thank everyone who has helped in this journey. Here’s to the next 100 years.

We are in the process of entering a programme with the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) and have secured funding from them for companies that wish to take part in a pilot project. The programme will cover energy audits, energy efficiency training, and feasibility studies for renewable energy or energy efficient equipment. Companies typically save between 10% and 15% of their energy costs, but some have achieved 40% savings, through these programmes. Our initial focus will be on the Logistics Division. Auckland Airport uses EECA. Air New Zealand won the supreme award at the EECA 2012 Awards for its ‘energy savings and positive influence” – it also reduced annual carbon emissions by 142,000 tonnes. We’re now able to bring the programme to the smaller companies in the aviation industry.
