CEO Update

Dear Colleagues
First and foremost our congratulations to Richard Hayes KNZM and Peter Stockwell ONZM, who both received well-deserved recognition in this year’s Queens Birthday Honours.
As most of you know, our annual Conference week has been refreshed and rebranded.  But, don’t worry, we are not losing any of the great sessions that our operators value and enjoy.  We will still have our AAA and NZHA Conference, as well as the Aviation Leadership Summit and our usual Divisional sessions see below.  If you haven’t registered yet – make sure you do so soon.  We will be giving a mystery prize to one lucky conference delegate or exhibitor who has registered and paid before the end of June, so be in to win!
Earlier this week the Australian Aviation Safety Regulation Review Report was released – it’s a pretty frank review of the sector see below.
This week is the last chance to make your nominations for our Aviation NZ Annual Awards – we know there are many amazing aviators out there!

Finally, we are now well in to our new financial year, so if you have not paid your member subscription yet, please do so as soon as possible.  We are working hard to be the best organisation we can be for all our members and the member survey gives ua a really good steer as to what we should be doing.  If you have anything you would like to raise with me directly, please feel free to drop me a line or ring, our door is always open.
See you in July if not before.
Wishing you a great weekend – go the All Blacks!

Ministry of Defence survey about NZ Industry Involvement in the NZ Defence Sector.

The Ministry of Defence Evaluation Division, at their minister’s request, is surveying industry involvement in the New Zealand Defence sector. They want to hear from companies which supply or seek to supply the New Zealand Defence Force and the Ministry of Defence with equipment, goods and services.
The aim is to better understand what people find helpful and what they find challenging about pursuing and securing business with the New Zealand Defence sector.  The survey is accessible through the Government Electronic Tenders Service (GETS) - reference number 42379.

New registration required for Government Electronic Tenders Service (GETS)

GETS is being given an overhaul to bring it up to date and make it simpler to use and easier to navigate. The overhauled service will still be free for both suppliers and purchasers.  Companies need to register and get a RealMe login which can be used to access a variety of government services.  If you already have an iGovernment login, this will become your RealMe login as well.  You can also update the list of tenders you wish to receive.  GETS reference 42315 contains the new registration link.

Customer Survey Updated

Last week, we gave feedback on the one thing that could be done to assist industry growth. This week, we’re commenting on what you see would help your company grow. AAA, NZHA and Logistics members identified reducing the costs of regulatory compliance as the biggest issue for them.  While much of the comment was directed at CAA, references were made to other government agencies which adversely impact on the ‘costs of doing business’ and especially ‘the amount of paperwork’ required. Training and Development respondents requested regulations that were aligned with international best practice, and suggested more trust between companies and more collaboration would help them grow.  The importance of collaboration, to improve efficiency and reduce costs, was also mentioned by stakeholders and non-members.  Next week, we’ll comment on your market and communication preferences and then on what we are doing as a result of the survey.

Congratulations to Spidertracks New

Great to see that Robinson Helicopters has selected the Spider real time tracking system as an option on all its R22, R44 and R66 helicopters.  In future, all aircraft are to be pre-wired with a Spider power cord and a mounting bracket installed on top of the instrument cluster.  A good example of a business relationship that can develop between an innovative New Zealand company and an OEM.

RAAA Conference, 8 - 10 October 2014

The Regional Aviation Association of Australia is holding its national convention ‘A New Horizon’ in the Hunter Valley.  The RAAA is the only organisation representing all sectors associated with Regional Aviation across Australia and therefore, plays a significant role in the aviation industry. The National Convention is highly regarded as a premier annual aviation event.  Av NZ CEO will be speaking at this event.  We also expect good representation from the RAAA executive at our Leadership Summit in July.  More info on the RAAA event is here

Australian Aviation Safety Regulation Review New

This week the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development the Hon Warren Truss MP released the Report of the Aviation Safety Regulation Review. The Report can be found at

Australia proposes new helicopter winch rules New

Following a number of recent helicopter accidents, CASA last month issued a notice of proposed rule-making aimed at improving the safety of helicopter external sling load and winching and rappelling operations. The agency proposes that operators “consider that pre-flight risk analysis will help prevent accidents by enabling risk mitigation strategies before flight.” Comments are due to CASA by 27 June.  Any proposed rules will become effective by the end of this year.

Implications of Indian and Indonesian elections for Aviation New

The Indian elections have resulted in a change of government.  We are likely to see the restoration of the more dynamic private sector approach to aviation that characterised BJP policies when they were last in power.  Challenges also confront the new Indonesian Government - the opposition won power in May with presidential elections scheduled for 9 July.  The Indonesian Government cannot continue subsiding the developing aviation sector.  We are tracking likely implications of these changes.  An initial Indian update attached and here was issued last week.  If you would like to be on the mailing list for future updates, let us know.

Farewell from Feleisha North New

It is with a very heavy heart that I am saying farewell. It has been a great learning experience for me to be a part of this organization and having unlimited interactions within the limited time available. It has been a pleasure getting to meet and work with Samantha, John, Andrew, Sarah, and Heather. I would like to thank them for their hospitality and kindness. Aviation New Zealand allowed me to use the skills I acquired over the past years as an undergrad. The experience I’ve been given a chance to have was more than I could have ever expected or asked for. Thank you to everyone who helped make my experience memorable and meaningful.
